Tupelo is a rare and wonderful honey produced from the White Ogeechee Tupelo Tree (nyssa ogeche). The White Tupelo is predominantly found in North Florida where it prefers the moist climate of river banks and basins of the rivers that flow into the Gulf of Mexico. The bees that produce Orchard Pond Tupelo Honey are kept on land for about six months throughout the year, where the strength and health of the hives can be safely built up, without the risk of pesticides or GMO plants. They are then taken to special spots along the banks of the Apalachicola River, where they are placed in locations that have been passed down for generations by local beekeepers. It is here that the Tupelo Honey is harvested, only once a year, during a brief window that the tree’s flowers are in bloom.
Nutrition and health benefits of honey include antibacterial and antifungal properties, vitamins and enzymes, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. These beneficial qualities are destroyed when honey is heated.
